Dear Martha & Family,
I was very sorry to read Paul's obituary this morning. I worked with Paul at Timberlea Junior High at the very beginning of my teaching career. I always admired Paul's kindness, patience, humour and most of all, determination. We would often chat at the end of a hectic school day and he would always have time for reflection on the challenges of the day along with humour and a soothing smile. Thank you Paul for those debriefs. May you rest in peace and rise in glory!

Well Paul, this obituary gives us a glimpse at your earthly life's journey. As a writer and an avid reader you would have approved and possibly have given it an 'A'.
One of my fondest memories of you is that Grade 9 Quebec trip that we along with others chaperoned ... Beechville-Lakeside-Timberlea School. That was a grand old adventure especially that lunch we shared of steamed mussels - Les Moules - at an Old Quebec City restaurant.
Your laughter when I stood shocked at the bottom of the longest set of steps which we had used a few hours earlier only this time they had to be climbed in order to get back to the bus in order to continue on. Then there was that long walk back from the waterfront where we had just completed an evening cruise on the St. Lawrence River where the students had enjoyed an evening dance. I struggled to climb the hill back to the accommodations and you showed no sign of tiredness.
As your vice-principal for four years I can only recall your one office referral. When that student arrived I knew it meant business as you were accustomed to handling your class discipline without any office intervention. You had a deep level of tolerance, love and patience for those adolescents in your care.
You introduced me to "The Clan of the Cave Bear" and for that I am thankful. You had many gifts and talents and unlike some of us you made the best of them.
You will be truly missed by many and it is my sad duty to be writing this message and to be sending my deepest condolences to Martha, your children, your grandchildren and your other loved ones.
It is time now for your endearing soul to rest in peace and rise in glory.

It was with sadness that I read that Paul has gone from your sight but I know not from your hearts. I knew Paul as part of the "Healy clan" at the top of the hill in Kentville. We go back a long way especially with our love of horses. Paul was the quiet one, always thinking, wanting to do everything just right, but oh what a sense of humour. I know you all will miss him, but know the memories are here in your hearts. Please pass on our condolences to the rest of his family. May God come alongside you as you grieve. My deepest sympathy to Paul's children and to Martha. I was blessed to have Paul as a colleague and friend at Timberlea Junior High in the 1990's. His witty comments kept us entertained in the staffroom, and I remember some heated crossword puzzle races. (I'm sure I even beat him once!) Since I am from Middleton, I especially enjoyed his stories of growing up in the Valley and working at Hostess Foods making potato chips. Most of all I remember his kindness to me as he understood the challenges of an hour-long commute on the 103, inviting me to share supper with his family before parent-teacher nights, covering my last class so I could get on the road when a snowstorm was developing.

Martha & Family:
Condolences to you and your family circle during this very difficult time. Very sad to hear about the passing of Paul. I fondly recall the days that Paul and I spent as colleagues at BLT and of the few years that we were teammates on a local softball team. I will always remember Paul as a free thinker with a genuine sense of humor. He could almost always provide comic relief, when it was most needed. I always admired his vision of education as he believed that the learner needed to take responsibility for his/her learning. Also have fond memories of Paul’s theatrical performances during those wonderful BLT drama performances. I know that a hole in your life’s now exists. May the support from others and the wonderful memories help to less the depth of the void. Prayers are with you!

Martha and family: it was with shocked and sadness to read of Paul’s passing. We so enjoyed having you both as neighbours. One memory that comes to mind, Maggie was about 7 and Paul was trying to get her to go inside the house. She started running around the car, hollering, “you can’t catch me Mr. Healy”. Paul couldn’t catch her but outsmarted her by going inside and waiting for her to follow. Wasn’t long and she did. Know Paul was so proud of all his children and they were proud of him. Take care and when we can gather, we will be there. Victoria and John Hopkinson

How sad to learn of Paul’s death. I had the pleasure of being his minister and recall how wonderfully he read the morning lesson at Riverview, ad-libbing an intro in a way that let you know you could take the reading seriously but not the reader; and maybe, just maybe--this communicated with a grinning flash of eye contact--even the minister. A strong and loving presence there. One of the people who make a minister’s job a joy. Lois and I grieve with his family.

What can we say that would make our hearts lighter after the loss of our dearest "friendly giant" neighbor Paul. His bear hugs, his smile, his humor, his love of life and everything in it will always be remembered. We could often hear music come from their house or Paul calling "Roy". Near the end of his journey, Raymond cleared a pathway to our backyard to make it easier for Paul to get through the bushes to our house. It was a long journey at the end but he never complained to us. His presence will be missed for a very long time. Rest easy our dear friend. You have left a legacy of love and friendship we will always remember. The family and friends of Paul were very lucky to have had him in their lives. God is with you through this sad time.

I had a great deal of admiration for Paul. I appreciated his ability to see though the layers and complexities of an idea or a situation and to discern what really mattered. And, of course, I enjoyed his sense of humour - sometimes just zany and silly but sometimes subtle and requiring contemplation. Usually after conversation with Paul I left with something to think about and something to laugh about. I regret that we met so late in our lives (in our sixties or thereabouts) and I regret that my grandchildren never had the benefit of being among his students. Paul lives on in the memories of those on whom he has had a positive impact.
And to Martha ... I was there the evening that, during a mid-performance break, you fell down a flight of stairs with enough velocity to leave a big dent in the wall at the bottom. You got to your feet, regained your composure, took a deep breath or two, went back on stage and finished the performance. You left the audience in awe of your talent, strength, and resilience. You're in a dark time now but you will again find the strength and resilience to spread warmth, joy, and love to those fortunate enough to be part of your world.
