JOHNSTON, Vera Madeline - 87, Upper Rawdon/Williamswood, passed away on January 8, 2014 in Melville Lodge, Halifax. Born in Halifax, she was a daughter of the late Weldon and Hazel (Verge) Swinehammer. Vera lived in the community of Williamswood for over 40 years. She spent many hours volunteering in the community, with numerous groups. She worked for the Red Cross during wartime, the R.C.M.P. in Halifax, also worked for Moirs candy and Simpson-Sears. She loved gardening and her birds. Vera had a great love for her family and friends and she cherished her great grandson. She is survived by her daughter Karen (Keith) King, Upper Rawdon; sisters Ruth Zinck, Halifax; Francis Peach, Halifax; and June Piegon, Quebec; grandson Brian King (Toni-May Sullivan) and great grandson Jacob King; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Donald G. Johnston, son Karl Johnston, brothers Russell Swinehammer, Earl Swinehammer, sisters Beverly Poole, Myrtle Costello, Evelyn Rockwell and Lorraine Knight. Cremation has taken place under the care of Ettinger Funeral Home, Shubenacadie. Visitation 1- 4pm, Saturday, with funeral service 2pm, Sunday, January 12, both in Ettinger Funeral Home, 2812 Highway 2, Shubenacadie. Flowers welcomed, donations may be made to Melville Lodge.
