John came to Halifax and joined the Royal Canadian Navy December 1953. It was here he started his career and proudly served until 1975. He started as a radar technician; later became a Photographer and served on several Royal Canadian Naval ships, including the commissioning of HMCS Bonaventure. His Naval career took him above the sea to be one of the 1st Naval Photographers on a High-Altitude Jet for that time. Other proud moments included photographing the disbursement of food from the Canadian Government during a famine in Nigeria, worked with a peacekeeping force in Cyprus and detached service for Canadian Military Intelligence.
He spent many years volunteering with the Milford Lions Club, travelling with other members to places far and wide. Along with Lioness Joan, they participated in many great community projects in the area for years.
John and Joan loved to travel and had many adventures such as circumnavigating Newfoundland by ship, cruising to Alaska, visiting Pete & Sue in Hong Kong several times, Aruba, a dude ranch in the US, and a train trip through the Canadian Rockies. They also cruised the Caribbean together with Dennis & Cindy. They had other travel companions, like Jim and Margaret Oakes, each in their 5th wheel, travelling with a caravan of other retirees all over the US. They enjoyed a special trip to Toronto with Pat and Kay Burns. John also travelled with George Burden to Norway, and then to visit the penguins at Antarctica.
So, in closing, we prepare for his committal and to place his ashes next to Joan, his great love, in their final resting place July 12, 2024. A committal service will be held at the columbarium at St George’s Anglican Church, Dutch Settlement at 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation. Please join us to say Farewell.
