Obituary of Harlan Russell MacPhee
Harlan Russell MacPhee, age 68, of Mill Village, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, March 7, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Born in North Noel Road to the late Herbert and Gwendolyn (Miller) MacPhee, Harlan's journey through life was marked by dedication, hard work, and a profound love for his family.
Harlan will be deeply missed by his devoted wife of 47 years, Sandra (Dickson); his cherished daughter, Brittney (Zac); his adored granddaughter, Scarlett; and his beloved grandson, Daxon; and his siblings, Valerie (Jim) Russell, Darren (Lisa), Cindy (Steven) Schofield, and Karen MacPhee. He was a pillar of strength and love for his family, and his memory will forever live on in their hearts.
From a young age, Harlan understood the value of hard work, starting his career in the woods alongside Frank Weir and Burton MacPhee. Later, Harlan dedicated 40 years to his work at National Gypsum, operating an excavator along with other mining equipment.
Upon retirement, Harlan continued to live life to the fullest, cherishing every moment spent with his family and friends. He had a passion for hunting and four-wheeling, and he loved nothing more than including his grandchildren in his adventures, creating memories that will be cherished forever.
In his free time, Harlan could often be found cutting and splitting firewood or enjoying the company of old friends over a cup of coffee and a laugh. He cherished the moments spent with his grandchildren, Scarlett, and Daxon, who affectionately called him "buggy." In his final year, he found great joy in working with them on landscaping projects with his tractor, passing on his knowledge and skills to the next generation.
Harlan will be remembered for his hard work, sense of humor, and his ability to find joy in the simple things in life. He lived by the motto, "It is what it is," embracing each day with resilience and determination.
An informal Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, March 10, from 2-4 pm at Ettinger Funeral Home, 2812 Highway 2, Shubenacadie. A graveside committal service will take place on Sunday, May 5, 2024, at Brookside Cemetery, Mill Village, with Rev. Natalie Buchanan-Rutherford officiating.
The family extends special thanks to Dr. Lionel Hindler, the VON, Dr. Cortney Smith, Dawn Ross, and the Palliative Care Team for their compassionate care and support during Harlan's illness.
Though Harlan may no longer walk among us, his memory will forever be cherished in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. May he rest in eternal peace.
