Susan, Keith, and families,
Dave and I are so sorry to learn of Marlin's passing. It was always nice to chat with him during our days and evenings of watching our boys play hockey. I spoke with him not long ago at the store. Despite the few details he shared regarding health issues, he remained positive and still had that sense of humour. The numerous condolences and heart felt messages are a true testament to how many lives Marlin has touched in his relationships with family, friends, co-workers and acquaintances over the years. He truly will be missed.

On behalf of everyone at the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour and the Office of the Worker Counsellor, I'd like to offer our sincere condolences. We never had a chance to meet Marlin, but are fortunate to know and work with his daughter Kim. Her love for her Dad speaks volumes about the kind of man he was. We know he will be missed. We wish Kim and every member of Marlin's family the best during this difficult time.

I worked for Marlin for a bit.... Every day, I'd hear, "Rick, you gotta put the gas caps back on the cars. We don't collect them." One weekend he asked me to be part of his pit crew when he had the drag car. There we were at the drag strip with this 1960s Camaro. Marlin at the wheel and his three cousins, Ken, John and me pushing the car out to the starting line. And once there, it wouldn't start. Nothing we did could get that car to start. Finally Marlin got out of the car and we had a meeting. "Push me back to the pit," he said. Why? "Just do it." Yeah, but why? "I'll tell you later." Come on, Marlin, we gotta get this thing started! "Rick, I forgot to put gas in it." I just stopped and looked at the car. You forgot to put gas in it? IT SAYS MARLIN'S GULF all over it and you forgot the gas?
He will be missed. I am sorry for your loss.

My heart is broken to hear of Marlin's passing.
He was my first employer, at Marlins Gulf in Shubenacadie East, back in the late 70's. He had a heart of gold, having a very strong work ethic he would always say " If you don't have anything to do go pick up a cloth and wipe something ".
A true family man he had a grin from ear to ear when talking about any of them.
I am glad to have called him my friend for all these years.
Right now I can't find anything to do to to ease my sorrow, I am picking up that cloth one more time to wipe away the tears.

Su,
Losing those we love is not easy, but losing someone to death is perhaps the most terrible of trials. Despite all the suffering, I ask God to make you not only see the negative but have faith in a heavenly reunion.
I know that trying to look on the bright side may seem outrageous to you now, but I believe that over time you may feel a real comfort in knowing that you shared a beautiful life with your husband. And may your memories be kept with you forever and serve as comfort.
May God give you the strength and courage day by day to fight for your happiness. May He enlighten your heart and give you eternal peace.

I met up with Tanner a few months ago in Foodland, were we shared a hug and talked for a bit.

Susan and family, We are so sorry to hear of Marlin's passing. He was a wonderful man. A few weeks ago I ran into him at Foodland. He was in search of ice cream because you had made apple crisp. We had a long "car" conversation and parted with a hug . I used to babysit Kim when they lived on the Crombe Rd. Over the 40+ years we often ran into each other and had great conversations. My condolences to the Tanner family. Marlin was my bus driver when I was in Grade Primary in Shubenacadie and when I was nervous about going to school my father told me not to worry because Marlin would take care of me. One day I forgot to get off at my stop and wasn’t sure what to do about it. Marlin noticed my distress and told me not to worry - after he finished his route he drove me home, right to my door (considering the bus stop was 1/2 mile away, that was a pretty big treat!). That was 40 years ago and I remember his kindness to this day.
