Obituary of Edward Francis Benere

BENERE, Edward Francis - Dec 21, 1936 – May 18, 2023

age 86, passed away peacefully at the Colchetser East Hants Health Centre, Palliative Care Unit, Truro, NS. Born in Enfield, he was the son of the late John & Lydia (MacDonnell) Benere.

Dad was employed with NS Light & Power, NS Power for 37 years, before retiring at age 55. Retirement did not suit him, and he then went to work at Ledwidge Lumber Co for many years. When not working, he could be found at his camp cutting firewood, four-wheeling and making the best fried egg sandwiches and corn chowder around. The summer months were spent maintaining their beautiful property by the river and enjoying the view with a cup of tea on the back deck. He loved family gatherings, taking the kids on wagon rides, good food and was famous for his bear hugs. One of Dads favourite memories was of the “big trip” in July 2010. Dad and his great nephews flew to Alberta to join Gary and Dennis Benere (who were lovingly referred to as (“his boys”) on their drive back to NS with a quick detour to BC. In 2018, due to Parkinson’s Dad became a resident of Willow Lodge, Tatamagouche. We are so grateful for the wonderful care he received there. The outstanding staff truly became his family and made it his home away from home.

Dad is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marjorie (Miller);

daughters Mary (Gary Andrews), Patricia (Darrell MacDonald), Theresa (Mark Josey); grandchildren Randall (Diana), Hailey (Darren), Chantal, Louise, Devon, Joel & Josie; great granddaughter, Eliana; his sisters, Rita White & Theresa (Albert Ross); sister in law, Florence Benere; brother in law, Roy Clarke; many nieces & nephews.

Dad is predeceased by sisters, Eileen, Marie, Dot, Marjorie & Yvonne; brothers, Willie, Leo, Dougie & Bernie; son in law, Keith Arsenault.

Special thanks to Dad’s long-time friend Ralph Hart, and his brother and sister in law, Tom and Sandra (Janie) Miller for the visits and shenanigans over the years. Thank you to all the care providers at both Willow Lodge and Colchester East Hants Health Centre.

Visitation will be held 6-8 PM Thursday May 25, in Ettinger Funeral Home, 860 Highway 2, Elmsdale. 

Funeral mass will be held 11 AM Friday, May 26 in St. Bernard's Church, 251 Highway 2, Enfield, Rev. Gerald David officiating.
