Very saddened to hear of Brian's passing. In the first week of August, we had a symposium, organised to honour the scientific life of Trevor Platt. On that occasion, Heather Bouman called and chatted with Brian, and I also asked her to convey my best regards to him. Heather told us that Brian sounded great, just his usual old self, and we were all elated. Brian was very much in our minds in those days, as someone who was such an integral part of Trevor's and my scientific career, and of the whole Biological Oceanography group, in fact. We were none of us prepared for the sad news that came right afterwards. Brian was a lovely person, immensely capable, and always ready to help us all. May his soul rest in eternal peace.

Brian was so generous and helpful with us students at BIO, I have happy memories of how he always put a good atmosphere to the work, and to the lab. As a student that was a precious gift, coming from abroad and not knowing too much.

I started as a tech in 1985 and Brian was the boss to whom we all answered to. Many weeks were spent outside his office standing at the C/N analyser with him passing and taking a quick glance at my performance. He was the 'Boss', direct in appraisal, yet always fair and with a smile in support. He was a great mentor and I am honored to have had the chance to work with him.
Please accept our condolences at his passing.

I had only been a travel consultant for a few days when Brian walked into my office to book his first trip with me, that was in 1985.
Having always done his research, he knew exactly where he wanted to go, and when - he always made my job easy.
I was still booking adventures for Brian and Fiona up to the start of the pandemic. We had a lot of great chats in the 35 years that I knew him - we talked about his garden, dogs, and of course, our shared love of Scotland. I will miss his drop in visits, and our chats.
Fiona, my deepest condolences to you and your family.

Brian was my supervisor during my time in Biological Oceanography. I am grateful for all that he taught me in the ways of research, and the PI adventures on so many cruises. He introduced me to many Scottish musicians and was encouraging when I turned to learning the fiddle, practicing after hours in the container lab - "Al is killing cats. . ! ". We will always remember Brian and Fiona hosting family gatherings on their farm. Brian was an important person to my working time at BIO. Condolences to Fiona and family. Brian will be remembered.

Brian Irwin was the technical mastermind who executed the practice of regular and consistent sampling in coastal waters for the purpose of characterizing the annual cycles of physical, chemical, biological, and optical properties in the water column. The first such exercise in St. Margaret’s Bay in 1967 formed the basis of the PhD thesis of Brian’s supervisor Trevor Platt. Similar studies soon followed in the Bedford Basin throughout the 1970s. Brian can be said to have been the technical inspiration who seeded the Bedford Basin Monitoring Program in the early 1990s, now in its thirty-second year of operation, which is recording water column properties over decadal time scales. The scientific careers of many researchers have been launched by the technical work of this remarkable man.

Sorry to hear of the demise of Mr. Brian Irwin , known to me since Sept 1967. He was very energetic, and sampled in various bodies of water including the Bedford Basin, St. Margaret’s Bay, The Atlantic, the Arctic and the Mediterranean-and we worked as a team. A quick learner of biological and oceanographic methodology he taught many undergrad and graduate students of Dr. Trevor Platt. Brain made significant contributions to various publications of Trevor. We used to meet socially . Our sincere condolences to Fiona and the bereaved family. Brian will be missed but not forgotten. May his soul rest in peace.

Our deepest condolences to Fiona and Family,
I had the pleasure of working with Brian at BIO for many years and counted him as friend as well as supervisor and mentor, Brian welcomed everyone into his home for many occasions and we had one of the most enjoyable working environments I have experienced in my 40 years working for the Institute. He was a caring person and was very invested in everyone around him. He loved his family, travelling and was very devoted to his job. He will be sorely missed to everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Dear Fiona and family:
Please accept my deepest sympathy on Brian's passing. We spent many happy days at sea together. We were often cabin mates so I got to know him very well. He was an extremely hard worker and expected those who worked with him to do the same. Because of this devotion to his job any cruise that Brian was on came back tons of valuable data. He loved his family and farm and talked about them often. Kevin worked for me one summer and showed very quickly that the apple does not fall far from the tree. Kevin, you are the best summer student that I ever had and your father was very proud of you. Please model your life after Brian's and you will go far. Sincerely Edward Horne

I was so saddened to hear of Brain's passing. I first met him at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography in 1993 and quickly realized that he was a veritable fountain of knowledge - he was always the first person that everyone went to for help with anything (equipment, data, sampling methodology etc.). He was always cheerful and never said no, and made everything seem like such fun! He has left a lasting legacy among all those he worked with at the institute. My sincere condolences to his family - he will be sorely missed.

I met Brian in 1984 when I was transferred from CCIW to BIO and placed under his wing. We worked closely together until he retired, and I was proud to attempt to fill his seaboots after he left BIO. He was a tireless worker and never had a harsh word for those trying to keep up with him. We shared more than a few beers and enjoyed a lot of Celtic music together over the years. My condolences to Fiona and the family.

Fiona, David, Sharon and Kevin my heartfelt condolences. I met Brian as a teenager shortly after he moved to his new home and was a friend and classmate of David. Brain got lumber from my father when he was starting out with his farm projects and David and I gathered hay during the summer for his father. Brian was always a kind and gracious man. While I was doing my undergraduate degree at Dalhousie, Brian kindly provided me with transport from Halifax to home and even once gave me a tour of the Bedford Institute.

My heartfelt condolence to you Fiona and Family, for the loss of such a dear person. Brian was like a loving and caring big brother to all of us International students at the Bedford Institute (BIO) of Oceanography. When I started my research at the BIO on P-I experiments, Brian was my entire guidance. I didn't know anything at all, he was patient and knew so much; he taught me the art and skills of working in the lab and onboard. By the time I left BIO in 1997, I was an expert. There was never a dull moment with Brian, he made tough work seem like fun all the time. I will always cherish the time we shared together. May his beautiful soul rest in peace.

My most lasting memory of Brian is him, at first light, mustering his “troops” for station call on Hudson, no matter what the weather or how late he and his team worked (or played) the night previous. It wasn’t a surprise to me how motivated and loyal his team was. His work ethic and knowledge gave everyone confidence in their own role in the team. He was an exemplary leader and mentor, leaving many well-trained scientists to carry the torch after he retired. His meticulous execution of our programs made us Research Scientists look mighty good; he played a major part in building the national and international reputation of the Biological Oceanography group at BIO. In a nautical sense, he was for his 35 yrs in our group our “anchor”. His passing is a big loss for us all.
My most sincere condolences to Fiona and family.

Brian was a truly generous person. For international students at BIO, like myself, he was our friendly guidance at the laboratory and on board. Always cheerful and ready to help, even feeding us on summer with the fresh products from his farm. His friendly words help easing the troubles we may have ran through. I was glad to receive him and Fiona during their trip to Argentina. I shall always remember him fondly. My condolences and regards to his family.

Brian was one of the first people I met when I came to Canada from the UK in 1980 to take a job at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography. My first thought was “where on earth is he from”, since it took me a while to recognize that Canadian/Scottish accent, which was so unique to him! I later grew to appreciate Brain’s endless energy, his determination, his refusal to suffer fools gladly and his kindness. These qualities led him to arrive at work earlier than usual every time there was a snowstorm, despite his long drive in, to be up with his team before sunrise to set up experiments at sea, despite having been up late “socializing” the night before, and to bring gifts of home-grown fruit and vegetables to us all. I still have blackcurrant bushes growing in my garden that came from cuttings Brain gave me. I will think of him when I look at them. My condolences to Fiona and the rest of the family.

Fiona and Family,
I was saddened to read about Brian’s death. He was one of the first friendly faces to greet me when I started working at BIO and made me feel comfortable in an unfamiliar environment. Until Brian’s retirement, we worked very closely together on a daily basis and when in doubt I always turned to Brian for guidance. He was a fountain of knowledge and possessed a great sense of humour. His kindness and generosity will always be remembered. He would always bring me back a souvenir from whatever corner of the world he travelled. Brian was always so proud of his family and loved to share stories of his homeland. May you find comfort in all the happy memories you have of him. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.

Brian and Fiona were among the first people we met when we moved here. They were both always kind and interesting. As a classmate and friend of David, I remember Brian (Mr. Irwin to us!) being n the garden almost every time we passed by on our way to a movie or whatever other activity we were up to at that time. He was always quietly kind and polite. Undoubtably he will be missed.
My sympathies at a time of loss and reflection to all who will miss him.

Brian was one of two people who interviewed me for a job at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography, and said 'you're hired.' As a result I met my husband who also worked there, moved to where I live now, and had the children I have. He and Fiona also hosted a great wedding shower for us at their home in Selma. He was a great man to work with, humble in heart, very knowledgeable about a lot of things, and most of all loving and kind. He will be greatly missed.
