Obituary of Rick Simon

SIMON, Pierre Joseph “Rick” – age 68 of Hilden. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Rick in the Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro in the early morning hours of February 27th, 2024. Rick was born in Truro on February 11th, 1956.

After receiving his grade 12 diploma from Hants East Rural High School, Rick attended and graduated from the University of Guelph with a degree in journalism. Rick helped establish the Mic Mac News through his skills as an editor, writer and photographer; it was a job he cherished. He then continued to represent his native community while employed at the Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq, Atlantic Policy Congress and most stately as Atlantic Regional Chief Assembly of First Nations. Furthermore, Rick represented on a level of community, provincial, federal to international of which are too numerous to mention. He was always such a hard worker and avid entrepreneur. After “retirement”, Rick spent many years trucking and especially enjoyed his time as a log truck driver.

For the past 40 years, Rick has been a staple in the 4x4 offroad community and was respected by many. It was a passion of his he shared with his son, Robert, whom of which meant the world to Rick. He was a very dedicated and loving father and grandfather. He had a love for cars, motorcycles, trucks, four-wheelers and anything with horsepower. He enjoyed being a mechanic and wrenching in the garage and one of his favourite things to do was to go offroading with his family and friends. He cherished the moments he spent with his grandsons, Caleb and Logan, and loved them very much. He thought the world of his son, Robert and his daughter-in-law, Tamara.

Rick is survived by his son, Robert and his daughter-in-law, Tamara (MacPhee); his grandsons, Caleb and Logan; nieces/sisters, Anna Nibby Woods, Jackie Nibby; numerous nieces and nephews.

 Rick was predeceased by his mother, Helen Simon; wife, Lana (McLeod) Simon; brothers, Ben Morris, John Nibby, James Simon; sisters, Veronica (Bell) Halverson and Annie Ivas.

Cremation has taken place. A visitation will be held from 6 pm until 9 pm on Thursday, February 29th, 2024, and again from 10 am until 1 pm on Friday March 1st, 2024, in Ettinger Funeral Home, 2812 Highway 2, Shubenacadie. A funeral service will be held at 2 pm on Friday, March 1st, 2024, in St. Kateri’s Roman Catholic Church, Indian Brook. Father Phil Thibodeau officiating. A community feast will follow at the Community Centre, Indian Brook.

In lieu of flowers a donation can be made in Rick’s memory to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada or to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Rick was a hardworking man whom was very smart, passionate, caring and had the most infectious smile and laugh. He will be loved and missed dearly.
