Obituary of Margaret Ruth Turner

TURNER, Margaret Ruth - passed away on August 21 2024, in her 85th year. While sudden, her passing was peaceful, and she was surrounded by close family.

This is a time of deep sadness, but it is also a time of celebration for her long and wonderful life. Ruth is survived by her daughter, Bonnie Legge and son-in-law David, their son, and the light of Nan’s life, grandson Nicholas, Ruth’s son Gary and his partner Marcelo, and her sister May Holley.

Ruth (nee Green) is predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Neville; her daughter, Shelley; her parents Isaac Green and Ethel Green (nee George); brothers Ralph and Doug Green and sisters Mary Chaisson, Rose Mills, and Winnie Howell.

Ruth was born in 1939 in Millertown Junction in Central Newfoundland and moved to Corner Brook on Newfoundland’s west coast at an early age. There she met her beloved husband Neville, raised her family, and remained for more than 60 years before moving to Enfield, Nova Scotia in 2023 to be nearer to her daughter Bonnie and her family. Ruth spent over 25 years as a federal public servant, retiring from her position within the Department of Employment and Immigration Canada in 1998. After retirement, she was able to devote her full attention to being Nan. She spent countless hours helping Nicholas with his homework, often applying her creative talents to his art projects, and helping to craft some of the best Halloween displays in the neighbourhood. She was a wonderful cook, and baker of many treats that she sent far and wide to be enjoyed by her family across the miles. Ruth will be deeply missed as a mom, a grandmother, a sister, and a friend.

We are sincerely grateful to the staff of the Queen Elizabeth II Surgical and Neurological Intensive Care Unit who offered the most wonderful and compassionate care in a time of crisis.

Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Ettinger Funeral Homes Shubenacadie and Elmsdale. In keeping with Ruth’s wishes, there will be no formal service.

As a 40-year survivor of breast cancer, donations in Ruth’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
