I just finished travel school and was looking for an agency to do my 3 month placement. I lived in the east end of Toronto and wanted something in the area.
One afternoon walking along Queen St E., I came across McKinnon Travel,
I peeked through the window and saw this man sitting in a glass enclosed office working, no one else was in the office, so I decided to go in and ask if I could do my placement there without pay of course, in order to get my diploma and the much needed experience that the travel industry requires.
Lewis agreed to let me do my placement there coming into the office 3 days a week, which I leaned so much from him. We became friends and he offered my a full time job with delight I excepted. He also would invite myself, mother and my young nephew over for dinner and he would sing for us. What a beautiful voice he had.
Lewis was also a jokester, one afternoon on a nice spring day Lewis decides he wants to clean up the office yard, no problem I can help......well as we were cleaning Lewis found a dead squirrel and knowing that I'm terrified of them he chased me in the office and I ran out the front door when I return he was laughing so hard. But, that wasn't the end of the squirrel trauma.....because when I went to pull of my chair to sit down he placed the dead squirrel on a dustpan on the chair! I screamed so loud and jump so high, that I started to cry as I ran once again out the front door.
Lewis felt so bad that on Christmas that year he had the nerve to buy me a stuff squirrel animal, thinking it might make me like them. I wasn't impress
but he laughed again at me.
I kept in touch with Lewis McKinnon when he first moved to NS.
My family is also from NS, I always promised Lewis when I visit NS I would pay him a visit. I was planning a trip down home, and looked Lewis up so we could have lunch or dinner and that's when I found out he had passed away.
My heart was crushed that I didn't get a chance to say goodbye to one of the best bosses I had in the travel industry.
R.I.P. you will always be in my thoughts love you!!!

For some reason, Lewis has been on my mind now for months. Lewis was the first person to take a chance on me as a brand new travel agent coming out of travel school in Toronto - he managed what was then called Travel Servicecentres. I had the privilege of working and learning from Lewis for a number of years. After that, we remained good friends for many years and sadly, drifting apart when he moved to Nova Scotia. I have such fond memories of us laughing and teasing each other, as well as his love of music and travel. We both loved to go to Fran's and other "greasy spoon" breakfast joints where his robust laugher could be heard throughout the restaurant. Lewis was a good, honest and hard working man who constantly gave to others and asked for nothing in return. He is very fondly remembered by me and very much missed. May God keep him close.

In a lifetime there is but a handful of people that will have a profound effect on you. Lewis was one of those and I was fortunate to have met him.
Wise and multi talented he made a difference in the lives he touched.
Close and committed to his family and friends and am sure each has a story worth relating.
A constant travel companion for many years over myriad destinations I will miss him. Thanks for the precious memories. Gone but never forgotten.

Murray was the first person that I met when I came to Toronto in 1969. He had a delightful infectious sense of humour. Very saddened to learn of his passing.

Lewis was not just my travel agent but also a good friend. Richard and I were on many cruises with him as well as visiting and staying with him when he moved back home to Nova Scotia. He stood by Richard watching me take flight in a hang glider, getting ready to comfort Richard should it have not gone well. We both will miss him dearly till we meet again. - See more at: http://ettingerfuneralhome.com/tribute/details/316/Lewis_MacKinnon/photos.html#content-start

It was with extreme sadness that I learned of Lewis's passing. It was so sudden and all seems so surreal even though we knew he was ill. He was taken from us too soon. It was an honour and privilege to have known him for the past 20 years in Toronto. I accompanied his dear friend June Hill to the lovely service in Schubenacadie and it was a genuine pleasure meeting his family. Lewis will be sorely missed by one and all.

I offer my sincere Condolences to the loss of your beloved sibling. I lived in the same Condominium building as Lewis in Toronto starting back in the early 2000. When i first encountered Lewis at 40 Homewood , i had become very fond of his positive outgoing spirit for life. We have shared many brunches over the years he lived in Toronto and helped me decorate and place furniture in all of my homes over the years, i thoroughly enjoyed everyone of them. I sincerely regret not having visited him while he lived in Nova Scotia. He will be so fondly remembered in my heart and i will never forget him. I truly admired his spirit in life and i will hope to see him once again in the future. Truly a remarkable human being !! and a great loss for humanity.
God bless you Lewis, Rest in peace, till we meet again.
Sincerely,
Mike Ploegmakers

To Edith, Ruth, Linda and families
My deepest sympathy to all of you for the loss of Lewis Murray.
No words at this time seem appropriate to explain how sad his Ontario friends also
feel. I knew him for 27 yrs. at least and we were closely associated with work, travel,
fun and families, like brother and sister.
I will miss my buddy Lewis very much and that smile, my prayers are with you all, and will keep in touch.

Dear Ruth and Edith and family,
It is with extreme sadness that I now learn that my dear elder brother is no longer with us. We were students together at the Royal Conservatory and roommates for many years.........he enriched my youth and later years enormously.......our road trips, Cuba, my parents in Winnipeg and the list goes on.............
Even though he left Toronto, I was so thankful that I could spend a brotherly week with him in NS last year.
My profound sorrow accompanies you here in Toronto.

To Murray's family
I am sorry to read of Murray's passing ! I always enjoyed Murray when we were young. He was always at the little Store and one day he taught me to play cribbage, which I still do! After he joined the Bank, I lost contact with him until the day of my Mom's 90th birthday party. He showed up and we had a great chat, and he gave me one of his Business Cards. I was more or less the M.C. for this event, and when it was time to sing "Happy Birthday", I asked if someone would play the piano while we sang, and Murray jumped to the Piano.....
There were quite a few young men of our vintage who were named after Dr. Lewis Murray Sprouell, who delivered many children down our way. I assume that this is where Murray got his name.
Once again ,sorry for your loss and indeed, a loss to the entire Community.
David Anderson
