To Germaine, Kathryn and Peter Meerburg and all the MacDonalds,
Although I cannot be with you in person, please know that I am with you in spirit. Robie touched all of us profoundly in our earthly lives. It will be impossible to fill his shoes. Please take comfort in knowing, however, that he has fulfilled his worldly responsibilities with honour and grace. He is now free to soar to the heights and depths of his greatest dreams. So wherever that is, there will be pictures of all of you in his heart's eye and there will be gardens aplenty and everything will be connected by railroad tracks!
With love, Barby XOX

Germaine and family:
My sincere condolences on your loss. Robie was one of the finest officers I had the pleasure of serving under. A quick wit with an infectious sense of humour, a clear and practical thinker, a leader who really cared, and a friend. I learned a great deal from him as did many others. He will be missed.

Dear Germaine
Please accept my sincere condolences on Robie’s passing. Robie was a fixture during my entire tenure in the reserves. I totally agree with Earle’s comment about Robie being the quintessential citizen soldier. He was one of the finest officers I have served with and I especially remember him for his leadership, his thoughtfulness and the respect he extended to those he interacted with. He shall be missed but certainly not forgotten.

Very sorry for your loss. Vic and I had BGen Robie as a Commanding Officer a few times (in his and our younger years) and have always had the greatest respect for him. Obviously very skilled, but we remember him more for being very personable and caring. You always knew exactly what he wanted and liked him so much you never wanted to disappoint. We will always have fond memories.

Winston and Judie (Archibald) Weir would like to express our sincere condolences to Robie's immediate family, including his siblings. I (Judie) went to school with Robie and brother Ron, and remember Robie as a very fine person. I am very pleased to see that he continued to follow his dream and was held in such high esteem by his friends, family and peers. We will be unable to attend the funeral but know that it will be well attended by those who knew him well and will miss him in their lives. Our deepest sympathies are directed to you all at this sad time.

Dear Germaine,
I was both shocked and saddened by the sudden illness and passing of Robie. We worked very closely together from the time we first met in Jan 1990 until I left LFAA in July 1994. At the beginning, we simply shared an office, but then quickly went on to become trusted confidants of each other--in garrison and field.
Robie was universally respected across AMA/LFAA and certainly left his mark on a whole generation of officers and NCOs.
There is no question but that his wise council, down-to-earth approach and sense of humour will be missed by all who knew him.
In sympathy,
John Boileau

I offer my deepest heart felt condolences to Germaine and family.
It saddens me to learn that Robie has left us; yet not in our thoughts or memory.
I learned while serving under Robie as his Deputy Comd. of WNSMD that he was the quintessential citizen soldier.
Robie spoke succinctly.
" A good order is one that can be written on the back of a cigarette pack". ( MacDonald Export A ).

Germaine and family, I was so pleased to meet Robie at RA Park in Halifax some weeks ago, and so disheartened to know that we will not see him again. A true gentleman and a fine officer, serious about his soldiering and with a dry Scottish sense of humour. I will always remember fondly from our Militia summer training in Aldershot when I was Chief Instructor and Robie was Commanding Officer. And I will fondly remember all of you whether you visited or served. I have soldiered with many Regular and Reserve Force LCol's and he was the best of a grand selection of officers from all Branches and Services. As a BGen, he rose from his early Private rank as a soldier in the NS Highlanders to the highest rank afforded a Militia officer. We will not see his like again.
I regret that I cannot be in Nova Scotia having blown the budget travelled extensively in Scotland, Ontario and Halifax as well as PEI in the last four months, leaving me here in BC with a budget based on pasta for the next four months! But I will remember him, and all of you with affection and love. Take care, Del.

My heartfelt condolences go out to Penny and Heather. Growing up with military dads gave us an extended family.
I’m thankful to say that I had the pleasure of knowing your Dad, and becoming childhood friends with you girls.
My father always spoke so highly of Robie, and I always found him to be very much a gentleman. As hard as it is to lose a father, just know he will be watching over you now as my Dad does all of us.
Hugs girls, may you find healing in this time of sorrow❤️

To Germaine and family. I'm so sorry for your loss. I had the great honour and pleasure of working as Robie's admin assistant twice - once in the 80's at Western Nova Scotia Militia District and again in the 90's at Land Force Atlantic Area. He was a wonderful man to work for and with, and a true gentleman. My thoughts are with you.

In 1991 I served with the 1st Battalion Nova Scotia Highlanders B company out of Springhill NS. It was both an honour and a privilege to serve under him. When you define what an officer is it would be General MacDonald. A full salute to you sir. My condolences are with the family. Sincerely, Private Shawn F. Gower

Germaine and Family: In the photo, Gen Robie looks really good in his Balmoral. As his RSM, I remember when he sent his official photo off to NDHQ. The CDS thought it was "an excellent photo, but you should lose the Balmoral", in favour of the green beret, official headdress of general officers.
Gen MacDonald loved his Balmoral. It was a pleasure and often fun to serve under such a fine leader and a good human being.
My sincerest condolences to you and your family. We will be with you via the internet on the 11th. Reg
