Obituary of Shirley Mae (MacDonald) Singer

 

Long time Lower Sackville resident, Shirley Mae (MacDonald) Singer, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, October 24, 2021.  Born in Truro, Nova Scotia on November 13, 1924 to the late Roy and Edith (Westbury) MacDonald.

 

Survived by her daughters Shireen, Verona (Stephen Shay), LeeAnne (Tom Fahie), son-in-law, Marcel Hinz and grandchildren, Braedon Brundage, Tylor Brundage, Kelsey Fahie, Ali Fahie, Roy Singer-Shay, Janiek Hinz and Heike Hinz. Also survived by her sisters Vivian Milton, Keswick, Ontario and Maxine Clark, Rothesay, New Brunswick together with her brother-in-law, Clarence Singer, Belnan, Nova Scotia as well as many nieces and nephews.

 

Predeceased by her youngest daughter, Adele Singer Hinz, her loving husband of 63 years, Vernon Singer, and siblings Robert, Keith and Jackie MacDonald. 

 

Shirley was a graduate of the Normal College in Truro, Nova Scotia in the 1940’s.  Over the course of many summers’, she devoted herself to higher learning completing her Masters of Education equivalency from the Nova Scotia Teacher’s College in Truro, NS.  She taught in many schools throughout the province with her longest tenure as a primary school teacher at the former Acadia Elementary School in Lower Sackville, NS. As a long-time member of Knox United Church, she sang in the church choir and was a member of the United Church Women (UCW) serving tirelessly well into her 90’s at church suppers. When she was 94 years old, a highlight of her choir membership were performances with the renowned Cape Breton’s Men of the Deep.  For many years she wintered in Florida with a dear friend and enjoyed international travel to Spain, California, Hawaii and the Bahamas with her youngest daughter, Adele, who was employed with the airlines.  Shirley was a member of the Hants East Historical Society and presented with her sister Maxine on growing up in South Maitland, Hants County in the 1920’s and 30’s. She enjoyed attending Berwick United Church Camp with her children and grandchildren as well as her friend, Thelma Dickie.  Shirley and Vernon enjoyed dancing together to old time music and cherished time with their friends and family. Shirley was quick witted, funny, had a strong spirit, was compassionate and generous with her time and resources supporting charitable organizations through her church and World Vision. She loved life and enjoyed a reunion in 2019 with her two sisters, all in their late 80’s and 90’s at the home of Maxine Clark.

 

Respecting Shirley’s wishes, her body has been donated to science. An internment service will be held at a later date. Our heartfelt thanks for the compassionate care provided by the VON and Palliative Care Team.
