Obituary of Vaughan Horne

HORNE, Cyril Vaughan, age 85, of Enfield, passed away peacefully at home with loving family after a courageous battle with cancer on March 21, 2023.

Born in Inverness, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia - April 30, 1937, he was a son of the late Cyril G. Horne (RCMP) and Frances J. Arnold. 

Vaughan was one of the youngest members to join the RCMP at 16 years old. “H” Division - N.S. He was a proud member of the Marine Div. and served in many areas in Canada. “B” Div - NFLD - 1953 South Coast - “O” Div - Windsor, Ont. Detachment 1957 - “A” Div - Ottawa, S/Div 1967-1973 Kingston, Ont. While stationed in Kingston, Ont. Vaughan was the CPL. in command of the RCMP Detachment Patrol Vessel Cutknife II with a crew of 4 members. The Cutknife was based at the Royal Military College and covered a patrol area from Kingston to Cornwall, Ont. and the entire Thousand Islands, from Kingston to Deseronto, Ont. Lake Ontario and the Rideau Canal from Kingston to Ottawa, Ont. He also instructed small boat training courses at the Military College (RMC) to members of the “A” Div - Ottawa and S / Div. RCMP members. The Cutknife II and crew were fully involved in this training.  He retired while serving on Halifax “H” Div. G.I.S. (General Investigations section).

From 1974-1987, he was Superintendent, of Halifax Shipyards, in charge of security and safety. From 1987-1997 he was Director of Operations at White Security and Investigations Limited, NS. After 43 years in the workforce, he fully retired in 1997.

He was a Lifetime member, past Vice President, and Past Treasurer of the Royal Canadian Montgomery Legion, Enfield branch #133. He also volunteered for several years with Enfield Lions Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and many trips to the camp in Renfrew on Grand Lake, with his best friend, Leo Horne. Enjoyed many good times and family gatherings since 2001, at his trailer, on Sully’s Campground by Grand Lake.  Christmas was his favourite time of year, especially Christmas Eve. The family would gather at his home to open gifts in the morning.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Myrene C. Horne, and by daughters Vanda (David) Gaudet, Ann (Wade) Knorr, Maria (Rob) Power, and son, Vaughn Horne; grandchildren, David “D.J.”, Jonathan and Bethany Gaudet; Holly, Amber, Julia and Savannah Knorr; Robert Vaughn “Bobby” Power  and 10 great grandchildren (Vaughan’s love for his Grandchildren could never be described in words); also survived by beloved nieces, Shelly, Sonya, Trudy, and nephew, Ward Tower.

 Predeceased by brother Maurice “Moe” and sister Pauletta “Polly” Tower.

In accordance with his wishes, there will be no service held.  Cremation has taken place under the care of Ettinger Funeral Homes, Elmsdale and Shubenacadie.  A private committal will take place at a later date.

The family would like to send thanks to the palliative care nurse, Dawn Ross, and VON Care coordinator, Jessica Flemming. Also a special thank you to our family friends, Patsy Doyle and Pam McNeill, for all the comforting food and support.
