Obituary of Verna Mae Weatherhead

Please share a memory of Verna to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

WEATHERHEAD, Verna Mae, age 99, of Upper Rawdon, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2024 at Dykeland Lodge, Windsor.

Born in Elmsdale, she was a daughter of the late Creighton and Janet (Grant) Kellough.  Mum grew up on the family farm in Belnan.  Verna was a graduate of Normal College and taught school in Mill Village, Upper Rawdon and Hants North.  In one of her first teaching positions, she taught all grades. She was a respected teacher and over the years her students would make an effort to talk to her at community events, when she was shopping or at a restaurant.  Mom had a strong faith in God which helped her get through the loss of 2 sons and a grandson.  She was a member of the UCW and a choir member for many years. She loved to dance, sing and play piano.  Verna enjoyed attending Truro dances at the Legion and weekly card parties in various communities. She and Everett, the love of her life, lived on the family farm, which was known as the pretty dairy farm in the Rawdon Hills, and enjoyed farm life. The farm was a gathering place for family and friends of all ages. No one ever left without a cup of tea and something to eat. Family was the focus of Mum’s life, she loved us all dearly.  Mum and Dad were a big part of their grandchildren’s lives; sleepovers, meals, exhibitions, arcades, learning to drive vehicles and tractors on the farm.  They and others enjoyed her rolls, molasses crinkle cookies and diamond cookies.

She is survived by twins, Janet (Norman) White, Upper Rawdon and Jim (Louise) Weatherhead, Lower Sackville; grandchildren, Jamie, Krista, Shannon and Dawn;  great grandchildren, Megan, Jonah, Carson, Leah, Callie, Jayden, Rachel and Everett as well as many nieces and nephews.

Verna was predeceased by her husband Everett, sons Clinton and Robert and grandson Joey. Mum was also predeceased by her siblings Hazel Lively, Mable Russell, Martha Blois, Henry Britton, Betty Reid and Gordon Kellough. She was the last surviving member of her family.

The family wishes to convey a very grateful and heartfelt thank you to Dykeland Lodge staff.  Many of the staff told us they loved her. Mum received exemplary care from doctors, nurses, care workers, dining room and housekeeping staff. Special thanks to Tracey, Denise, Zoe and Leona (just to name a few).

Visitation will be held at 6-8 PM Wednesday, April 10, 2024 at Ettinger’s Funeral Home, Shubenacadie, from where the funeral service will be held at 2 PM Thursday, April 11, 2024, Rev. Kim Curlett officiating.

Family flowers only. Donations to the Upper Rawdon Cemetery Fund, c/o Sarah Withrow, 2129 Highway 14, Centre Rawdon, NS, B0N2N0.
